The treasurer of the Norwell firefighters union was arrested at the Foxwoods casino this week and charged with embezzling more than $46,000 from the union's account, according to Norwell police.

Truong Nguyen, 35, of 110 East Squantum Street in Quincy, is being held in Connecticut on an embezzlement charge, police said in a statement today.

The alleged theft was uncovered last week when Citizens Bank notified the president of the union of an overdraft from an account that was supposed to have more than $40,000.

According to police, when union officials contacted Nguyen, he promised to bring the books and bank statements to the office last Saturday. With the documents in their possession, firefighters gave police 24 canceled checks, all made out and cashed by Nguyen, police said. The transactions began in October and continued through this month, totalling more than $46,000 and depleting the firefighter's account, police said.

When Nguyen did not respond to calls from police, or return to work, detectives obtained a warrent and later learned that he was at Foxwoods, where he was arrested this week. Police said he is being held on $99,000 cash bail.
