A Hanover man is facing criminal charges after police say he drove off a Norwell road and crashed into a tree Sunday morning, killing the passenger in the car.

Police said 21-year-old Daniel Heywood, of Webster Street in Hanover, was also charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and vehicular manslaughter after he lost control of the Hyundai Elantra he was driving at the intersection of High and Oak Streets a little before 4 a.m.

Heywood’s passenger, 21-year-old Karl Mueller of Rockland, was taken to the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth and later pronounced dead. Late Monday morning, Heywood was listed in “good condition” at the same hospital.

Norwell Police Officer Michael Fletcher observed that the car had “extensive front end damage" and was facing south in the northbound lane on High Street, according to a written statement from the police department

Norwell police also said the State Police accident reconstruction team was called in to assist with the investigation.

Because Heywood was still in the hospital Monday morning, it was unclear when he would be arraigned at Hingham District Court.
