A 27-year-old Norwood man was struck by a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail train and killed early Tuesday morning about a quarter-mile east of the Windsor Gardens train station in Norwood on the Franklin line.

According to a statement from MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo, the man had been trespassing on the tracks when he was struck. Norwood firefighters declared the man dead at the scene, Pesaturo said.

Norwood police received a call about the accident around 12:30 a.m. and called in the Norwood Fire Department for assistance. Firefighters were first on the scene near Walpole and Endicott streets, and Transit Police arrived shortly after, according to the police log.

Norwood police said in a statement that the accident is in the jurisdiction of Transit Police but that the Norwood Bureau of Criminal Investigation will assist in the investigation.

Investigators were still awaiting confirmation on the identity of the victim, Norwood police spokesman Kevin Grasso said.

The Norwood accident was the second fatal train incident in 24 hours following another near Sharon on Monday where a person was struck and killed by an Amtrak Acela train traveling from Washington to Boston.
