State and Norwood police conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Route 1 Friday night and arrested nine drivers during the 3 1/2 hours.

The checkpoint was located on Route 1 southbound adjacent to the ITT parking lot. At 11 p.m., traffic was narrowed to a single lane and motorists were stopped momentarily for checks, police said in a release.

Those who showed signs of drinking were administered field sobriety tests overseen by a State Police lieutenant, police said.

Six drivers were charged with operating under the influence of liquor, one was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, one was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and one was charged with driving while unlicensed.

In addition, two passengers were taken into protective custody.
