Two Massachusetts contestants win Miss India Show pageant

A 21-year-old from Norwood was crowned Miss India New England and a 16-year-old from Sharon won the Miss India Teen New England in a competition held at Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College earlier this month.

Mansee Sangani of Norwood, a senior at UMass Boston who works as a lab technician at New England Cord Blood Bank in Newton, was crowned Miss India New England at the Nov. 17 event, which drew an audience of 400 .

“Although my achievements and awards dictate my work ethic and I believe that my personality is reflected by my simplicity. In conjunction with having values of an Indian girl, I also possess the characteristics of a modern, contemporary woman,'' she said in a statement distributed by the contest organizers.

She is involved in tax planning at UMass Boston and provides help to low income families in Dorchester, and teaches math to undergraduate students as a volunteer and serves as a treasurer of the Pre-Medicine Society.

In the teen contest, Krithi Nathan of Sharon won Miss India Teen New England and was also given the title Miss Photogenic.

According to a biography from the contest organizers, Krithi's interests "include Indian classical dance Bharatnatyam, playing ‘Veena’ (Indian instrument), photography and painting sculpture. She also believes in doing Yoga as it is very relaxing. She has a warm heart for underprivileged population of India and believes in helping and donating to them. She is very confident and carries herself elegantly on stage and has also performed on Indian TV Channel in Bangalore.''

In all, there were 26 contestants from three states, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The winners go to the Miss India USA contest, to be held in Royal Alberts Palace in New Jersey in early 2013.

According to a release from the organizers:

First and second runner up for Miss India are Monica Gill and Neha Katyal; for Teen category -Samantha Kakullavarapu and Komal Prakash. Amrita Vadhera and Roshni Mirchandani got title Miss Congeniality and Miss Talented are Shirin Bakre and Ami Shah. The audience also voted for their favourite contestant. Miss India Miss Viewers choice is Namita Dodwadkar and Teen Miss Viewers Choice is Komal Prakash.
