The Southborough Little League team defeated the storied Peabody Western program 10-4 in six innings Sunday, capturing their first ever state Little League title and advancing to the Eastern Regional in Bristol, CT.

In an outpouring of emotion, Southborough fans rushed onto Kelley Field in Norwood, as Peabody's players hurried to gather their things after the game, ending the weekend's tournament.

Peabody was first on the board after a two-run homerun by Kyle Lynch in the top of the first inning. Matt Trehub, the Southborough starter, settled in after the shot and struck out three of the next four batters to end the inning.

But Southborough struck back quickly, putting together a seven-run second inning. The rally survived after a strike out was overturned, and Andrew Warfield was granted first base on catcher’s interference. Using the controversial call to their favor, Southborough proceeded to bat through the order, ending the inning five runs ahead.

Peabody would only get two more runs as Trehub shut them down. He finished with a complete game effort, giving up nine hits and striking out eight. David Wrin was a hero on offense for Southborough as he went 4-for-4 with three doubles.

Peabody fell short of what past years’ programs accomplished. This was the team’s sixth straight appearance in the state tournament, and last year’s team made it all the way to the World Series in Williamsport.

Southborough will move onto the regional stage, taking their team to Bristo to compete for a chance at playing in Williamsport. Their first game will be against the team from Bangor, Maine on Friday, August 6th at 2 PM.
