Donovan drops out; no primary for mayor in Peabody
An anticipated September primary in the race for Peabody mayor is off after candidate Russell Donovan dropped out to run instead for an at-large city councilor position.
The deadline to file nomination papers was Tuesday Aug. 2, finalizing the Nov. 8 election between two candidates: City Councilor Ted Bettencourt and Sean Fitzgerald, town manager of Plaistow, N.H. and former chief of staff to outgoing Mayor Michael J. Bonfanti, according to the city clerk's office.
Bonfanti is stepping out of office after five terms as mayor.
Donovan said he decided not to run for mayor after it became clear to him it would be an uphill battle.
“They're both favorite sons, both grew up in Peabody,” he said. “I'm a transplant from Lynn. It's going to be a campaign of favorites.”
Primaries will still be held Sept. 20 in the races for Ward 3 councilor and seats on the Municipal Lighting Commission, according to the city clerk's office.
