As he prepares to take his oath as the city’s next mayor on Jan. 2, Councilor at large Ted Bettencourt has been busy preparing for his new duties. Aided by a transition team, the mayor-elect has been meeting regularly with department heads “to get a handle on the issues that each department is dealing with,” Bettencourt said.

This coming week, Bettencourt plans to announce some initial personnel decisions he will be making upon taking office. While not disclosing details, Bettencourt said one involved his planned appointment of a chief of staff, a position that has been vacant for the past three years under current Mayor Michael J. Bonfanti. Sean Fitzgerald, whom Bettencourt defeated in the Nov. 8 election, was the last chief of staff. Although Bonfanti offered him the use of a city hall office for his transition work, Bettencourt said he has opted to do the work out of his law office, which is a short distance from city hall.

The four primary members of his transition team are Ed Lomasney, who served as his campaign manager; City Councilor James Liacos;  and Debbie Ryan, who served as his campaign organizer, and her husband, Michael Ryan, a retired principal of the Carroll Elementary School.
