Peabody remembers Sept. 11, 2011

Several North Shore communities will hold events to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost 11 years ago in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In Peabody, the Fire Department will hold an open ceremony Tuesday morning at 9:50 a.m. at its headquarters on Lowell Street to remember the civilian and first responder lives lost in the attacks. The ceremony will feature remarks by Mayor Ted Bettencourt and Fire Chief Steven E. Pasdon followed by the lowering of the flag, a minute of silence and prayers.

In Newburyport, those who purchased American flags from the Exchange Club of Greater Newburyport to commemorate the victims of the attacks may pick up their flags at the Mall Tuesday. The flags - marked with the names of those who died in the attacks and people who serve as fire, police, emergency medical technicians, or military personnel - have been on display on the Mall since Sept. 7.
