Peabody Mayor Edward Bettencourt Jr. has asked Gov. Deval Patrick to let him appoint an interim replacement for the late state Rep. Joyce Spiliotis in the 12th Essex District, which covers most of Peabody.
Spiliotis died in November and a special election to fill the vacancy created by her death is scheduled for April 2.
But Bettencourt wants the opportunity to appoint an interim representative, who would pledge not to seek the office in the election
The representative would serve until the winner of the special election is sworn in and would be “someone with familiarity with the state budget process as well as constituent service, “ Bettencourt said in a letter to the governor this week.
“Although I respect the special election process, I am greatly concerned about the lack of representation for Peabody during the interim,’’ the mayor said.
“Particularly during the early portion of the legislative session when your budget proposal is released and district budget priorities articulated, I feel the City of Peabody will be an a significant disadvantage.”
A spokesman for the governor could not immediately be reached for comment.
