In order to increase volunteers and continue to raise awareness about domestic abuse, the agency Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC) is holding a Peabody fundraising event this month.

HAWC serves 23 cities and towns on the North Shore and has previously hosted fundraisers in Beverly, Gloucester and Lynn. HAWC is hoping to host an event in each city and town that it services, selecting the Stonewood Tavern in Peabody as its next stop on Tuesday February 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“It really helps the agency to have folks come out,” said Paula Gomez Stordy, HAWC’s director of community relations. “We really need the community.“

In addition to reaching out to supporters and victims, 20 percent of the proceeds from HAWC attendees will go to the agency’s services.

The agency will set up a table in the restaurant and hand out pamphlets along with other information regarding its services. It is a way to broaden awareness about domestic violence, and strengthen the agency's presence in the area.

HAWC has seen an increase in volunteers, supporters and donators, following previous fundraisers.

“We can’t do this alone in our work towards ending domestic violence,” Gomez Stordy said. “Sometimes people might come to us after an event, or if something is happening in their relationship…this is a way of reaching out in a non-threatening, social environment.”
