Beginning in April, the city of Peabody will offer its military veterans a low-cost shuttle service to and from the Bedford VA Medical Center and the VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plain.

Round-trip service from the Torigian Community Life Center on 79 Central St. to the hospitals is $5.

The shuttle, which will make its first trip on Tuesday April 2, will go to the Jamaica Plain hospital on the first Tuesday of every month, and the Bedford VA on the third Tuesday of every month.

Shuttles will depart the Council on Aging at 9 a.m. and depart the hospitals at 2 p.m. for the return trip to Peabody.

“I have heard from many veterans that getting to and from the VA hospital can be quite an ordeal in terms of transportation, parking and finding a family member or friend to accompany them,” said Mayor Edward Bettencourt in a recent statement. “This shuttle service is designed to alleviate some of that burden so our veterans can focus on getting the medical care they need.”

Veterans interested in obtaining shuttle service are being asked to arrange their own appointment with the VA Hospital on the corresponding Tuesday that shuttle service is offered.

All appointments must be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.. Once each veteran has their Tuesday appointment with the hospitals, they are asked to contact the Council on Aging to reserve their spot on the shuttle.

One escort per veteran is allowed at no extra cost.
