Hundreds crammed into the McCauley Building Lobby at Quincy Medical Center to take in a program of Asian art, music, fashion, and food to benefit the hospital’s Asian Service Fund.

Art from the Chinese American Fine Art Society was on display Tuesday night for silent auction, raffle tickets were being sold, and models from the Tonn Model Management agency mingled with the crowd and showed off recent fashions by local designers, all to help raise money for the health education, screenings and publications for the immigrant community served by QMC.

The festive atmosphere underscored a strong need for the programs at the nonprofit, 192-bed, acute-care hospital, officials said.

The event raised about $40,000 last year, said Sandra McGunigle, a spokeswoman for the hospital, and officials were optimistic the event this year would bring in at least as much for the hospital, which is affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine.

“When you open up your wallet, you are not only getting something you like ... some new immigrant will benefit from your generosity,” said Dr. Catherine Tan Chan, co-chairwoman of the event.

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch (pictured above with models from Tonn Model Management) was also on hand to support the fund-raiser and said the hospital does important outreach work in the community.

“Quincy Medical Center is a wonderful institution,” he told the gathered crowd.

As a home for many new immigrants, Quincy needs the hospital’s outreach programs to help all new Americans, said McGunigle.

“Our hospital reflects the population of our community,” she said.

Dr. Wan C. Wu echoed McGunigle’s sentiment. “This is a community hospital, and we need to be strong, and we need to be here,” Wu told the crowd.
