South Shore YMCA hopes Taste of the South Shore brings funding, awareness

The South Shore YMCA is readying the 16th Annual Taste of the South Shore fundraiser, hoping to drum up money to meet increased demands for financial assistance at its camp programs.

Event organizers are hoping to raise over $100,000, money that will go toward supporting Y programs and services as well as providing scholarships for kids wishing to attend Y camps.

The event is part of $1.3 million the organization will raise this year for all of the South Shore Y branches, including Hanover and Quincy.

“We will also work toward getting other contributions from grants and trusts, and we will always give out more because we don’t want to turn anyone away,” said Cheryl Botieri, Executive Director of Mission Advancement for the South Shore YMCA. “Especially with the economy, some families have several members who may not be working.”

The fundraiser will take place at Lombardo’s in Randolph on March 22, and will feature 28 of the South Shore’s top restaurants, bakeries, and caterers to serve up dinner and dessert to attendees.

Tickets are $100 for the event, which runs from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m. Participants will also get to hear stories from children about the Y’s programs and have the chance to donate to camp scholarships during the event.

“Basically, everyone comes and samples all this incredible food. Most chefs donate their services for this evening,” said Hingham resident and Co-chair for Taste of the South Shore event, Ann Barres. “It’s a great evening, where people who love the YMCA and want to give back come to participate and send over 600 kids to camp.”

In addition to serving up an incredible meal and raising needed funding, the event will also honor State Street Corporation for their contributions to the YMCA. The company has spent more than 500 volunteer hours and donated more than $1.15 million over the years, she said.

In addition, State Street was instrumental in starting the Germantown Neighborhood Center, offering $500,000 to establish the center which now not only provides a food pantry for needy residents in and around Quincy, but also offers a woman’s boutique for low-income career women, GED programs, and even after school activities for the neighborhood children.

“The current Germantown neighborhood center wouldn’t have happened without their support,” Botieri said. “They were also instrumental in beginning the woman’s boutique at the Germantown center – helping them empower the women there and coaching them, helping them lead more productive lives.”

State Street also donated $1 million to the capital campaign for the new Quincy branch.

“That has been a huge statement of support to have this new Quincy branch,” Botieri said.

Having a lot of business in Quincy makes it easy to give back to the community, said George A. Russell Jr., executive vice president of State Street Corporation

“As a major employer in Quincy, State Street believes strongly in giving back to the communities where our employees live and work, and we are very proud to support the work of the YMCA in making it a better place to live for families and children,” he said. “Our employees are especially fond of volunteering at the YMCA and the Germantown Neighborhood Center where they return year after year to participate in a variety of tasks and interact with clients.”
