All four sections of Wollaston beach are closed to swimming on Thursday, after testing showed elevated levels of bacteria.

Wollaston beaches are tested daily and are under the purview of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. Beaches with a bacteria showing higher than 104 colony-forming units of bacteria per 100 milliliters of water are closed to swimming.

Testing typically looks for enterococcus, a bacterium found in fecal matter as well as the intestines of humans and animals.

Testing results from Sunday showed high levels at all four Wollaston beaches, with 657 cfu/100 ml. at Channing Street, 373 cfu at Milton Street, 419 cfu at Rice Road, and 1,274 cfu at Sachem Street.

Although all four beaches had results lower than the threshold on Monday and Tuesday, they remain closed to swimming as a precautionary measure.
