Quincy police said an off-duty officer apprehended a man accused of shoplifting at the Stop and Shop on Southern Artery on Monday.

The officer, whom police would not name, was standing in line at the Stop and Shop 45 minutes before his shift started. While in line, the officer noticed store security officers talking with a person, who ran out of the store, police said.

According to police, security officers followed the man, and the officer also jumped into action, dropping the items he was about to pay for and chasing after the suspect.

The officer eventually caught up with the man in the parking lot of the store and subdued him until uniformed police arrived.

A search of the suspect found ice cream and some stationery items, police said.

Joshua Jones, 24, from Quincy, was arrested and charged with shoplifting.
