A water main break near the Quincy Ferry has suspended service

Ferry service from the Fore River Shipyard most likely will be out of operation for at least the rest of the week, after a water line broke near the spot where customers board the boats.

According to MBTA officials, the water line, approximately 30 feet from the sea wall, was found leaking. A crack developed in the pavement within 10 feet of the seawall, spilling water onto the gangway where customers typically board the ferry boats.

Officials have since closed the ferry terminal until the total damage and condition of the wall can be assessed.

Already problems are apparent. The break caused movement in the wall along with cracking in the concrete in the vicinity of the gangway from the terminal building to the dock.

Scheduled Quincy service will subsequently start and end in Hingham. Service is still ongoing from Hull and Logan.

In lieu of the Quincy ferry, customers have been encouraged to use the Greenbush and Old Colony commuter lines as well as the Red Line.
