A different kind of take out food at Roslindale’s Community Kitchen

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to eat healthier or less expensive meals, you couldn’t ask for a better start than at Roslindale’s next Community Kitchen event run by GreeningRozzie.

The local nonprofit, focused on making Roslindale a greener and more environmentally friendly place to live, started the monthly event in December at the Roslindale Community Center. The terms are simple: bring a vegetarian recipe that feeds eight, with all the ingredients and necessary dishes, or pay $15 and assist in the kitchen. All the participants help prepare all the dishes and everyone takes home a variety of what was made. The Community Center's kitchen has just one oven with four burners, so space is limited to 12.

Aviva Furman, who attended last month’s event, wrote on GreeningRozzie’s blog that community kitchens “provide a fun way to get to know neighbors, learn new recipes, and stock the fridge with economical and healthy food.”

Dishes at the last kitchen gathering included chipotle spiced squash, lentil salad, vegan macaroni and cheese and poached pears. At this Saturday’s event, shares of organic wheat will be available at wholesale prices, live entertainment from local musicians will be provided and a knife sharpener will be on hand.
