Two projects under way in Roslindale should please residents when completed. Both the Flaherty Pool and the Boston Centers for Youth & Families Archdale Community Center are in the process of major and much-needed updates.

On Nov. 26, the Flaherty Pool began undergoing a $5.6 million complete renovation, including upgrades to the exterior, all mechanical systems, the locker rooms and interior spaces, and the pool itself.

“This is a fast-track project and there will be a heavy amount of construction traffic on a daily basis with a great deal of activity in and around the building,” noted Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia M. Pollak in a press release. “For the safety of all, the area will be fenced off and the [Healy Playground] tot lot closed until the Flaherty Pool reconstruction project is complete.”

The project is slated to be completed July 1, 2013, with the tot lot reopening as soon as June 1.

Beginning Dec. 10, the Archdale Community Center begins an $850,000 renovation including a new roof, new gym floor, new gym scoreboard, new gym bleachers, painting, new gym wall pads and upgrades to the HVAC system.

In addition, the center will sport a new rock wall, with features including a climbing wall, a “flying squirrel” rope and a challenge course. Archdale is one of six community centers across the city to receive a rock wall through the FY13 Boston Centers for Youth & Families budget.

The staff and programs will relocate to the Roslindale Community Center for the next three months, according to a press release.
