Someone stole money from collection boxes and smashed a stained glass window estimated to be more than 100 years old at the Mission Church in Roxbury over the weekend, Boston police said.
The theft at the church was reported Sunday morning by church personnel, police said in a statement. The church, whose formal name is the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, was in the news last year when it was crowded with dignitaries for the funeral of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
Police said $200 to $300 might have been in the collection boxes. Church personnel also told police that a smaller window inside the church had been broken.
Police said they were investigating the crime. They encouraged anyone with information to call detectives at 617-343-4275, or, if they wish to remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS or text the word "TIP" to CRIME (27463).
