Residents in Roxbury and Mission Hill will celebrate their heritage Saturday, Jan 5, with Sociedad Latina’s annual Three Kings Day.

Now in its 22nd year, the event known in Latino culture as Día de los Tres Reyes Magos, celebrates the tradition with food, music, and gifts for area youth.

“Latino youths need opportunities to learn about and celebrate their cultural traditions,” Alexandra Oliver-Davila, executive director of Sociedad Latina, said in a statement. “With a strong sense of cultural identity and pride, youths are able to remain resilient in the face of challenges. If we expect youth to succeed, we must ensure that they build a strong sense of self rooted in their family’s cultural heritage.”

The holiday, born out of Catholic traditions, recounts the biblical journey made by the Three Kings to deliver gifts to baby Jesus.

The Mission Hill based organization, however, has taken a more contemporary approach to the event with trivia, skits, and a celebration of Latino culture.

The Jan. 5 activities, which have become a hit in the neighborhood, will run from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Mission Church Parish Center, 1545 Tremont St.
