William E. Reed Auditorium seeks license to allow hall renters to provide their own liquor at events

A representative for the William E. Reed Auditorium in Roxbury was before the Boston Licensing Board Wednesday morning seeking a liquor license for the site’s function hall.

The General on Premise All-Alcoholic Beverages License would allow people who rent the hall to bring their own alcohol to events. Previously those who rented the hall and wanted to serve alcohol would have to go and apply for a one-day temporary license, said Pires Manuel, an attorney who represented the establishment before the board.

Located at 14 Washington St., the hall is owned by the non-profit group Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge Corporation.

Manuel said the hall needs the license so it can attract business, compete against other area function spaces, and provide better service to its customers.

“This will help establish a line of revenue for the group,” said Manuel. “It will help make the group competitive.”

The offices of at-large City Councilors Felix Arroyo, Ayanna Pressley, John Connolly, and Stephen Murphy along with the offices of City Councilors Tito Jackson and Charles Yancey all voiced their support for the license.

The Mayor’s Officer of Neighborhood services also threw its support behind the request, but asked the board to consider a 1 a.m. closing instead of the proposed 2 a.m. closing.

The board will make its decision Thursday.
