Franklin Park was awash with BBQ smoke Saturday as area residents took part in the annual Roxbury Pride/Juneteenth Celebration.

Now in its 17th year, the event brings together family and friends from the neighborhood and those who have since left.

With music and plates piled high with smoking BBQ hundreds filled Franklin Park’s Shattuck Grove for the event.

Although the day concentrates on celebrating all things Roxbury, including those that inhabit the neighborhood, it also commemorates Juneteenth.

Held officially on June 19, Juneteenth recognizes when the last people held as slaves in the United States learned they were free in 1865.
