City reminds residents to respond to Annual Listing census surveys to avoid delays when next voting

The city this week kicked off its annual door-to-door effort to find residents who have not yet responded to the 2013 Annual Listing census surveys mailed to Boston households five months ago.

Those who fail to respond to the surveys could have their voting status designated as “inactive,” which would lead to delays the next time the resident tries to vote, the city’s Board of Election Commissioners said.

Information compiled through the annual census is used to maintain the integrity of voting lists and also provides accurate listings for the state jury commissioner’s office.

State law requires that every municipality in Massachusetts conduct such a census survey each year, officials said. In February, the Election Department in Boston mailed out more than 300,000 listing forms to households citywide.

Starting this week, the city hopes to find, in-person, those who have not yet responded via prepaid mail, telephone or online.

The door-to-door campaign is led by listing officers, who work in teams and will be wearing city-issued photo identification badges and orange mesh vests indicating they are working for the Election Department, officials said.

Boston Police and other agencies and officials will be notified of when and where the teams will work.

Listing officers do not collect money, sign residents up for any services or collect Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers, city officials cautioned.

The listing officers plan to begin the door-to-door effort in Ward 12 in Roxbury and then work their way through Dorchester to Ward 17, city officials said. After that large portion of the city has been covered, teams will move to other neighborhoods.

Residents can complete their Annual Listing survey by phone Monday through Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. by calling 617-635-3767.

When completing the survey online, a form must be filled out for each member of the household who is 17 years or older. To complete the online forms, visit www.cityofoboston.gov/elections.
