The Trotter Innovation School in Roxbury was recently highlighted for its work to create a healthier school environment for young.

The American Lung Association awarded the kindergarten through fifth-grade school its 2013 Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative Champion Silver Award, according to a release from Boston Public Schools.

The honor commends the school for going “above and beyond” when it comes to its student’s health and for its use of strategies outlined in the Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative.

Funding received through the award will be used to create “starter kits” that will help other BPS schools implement the Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative.

The kits will provide both teachers and school staff with educational materials and information about treating and preventing asthma, as well as how to handle asthma emergencies.

Inhalers and Open Airways For Schools kits will also be distributed as part of the award.
