Two Salem students recognized for academics

Amid discussions of budget transfers and memorandums of understanding for the Salem Community Charter School, the Salem School Committee recognized two Salem High School seniors for their academic achievement.

Victoria Phu, and Kurtis Banville, both 17, each received a Certificate of Academic Excellence from the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Monday night. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, who also chairs the School Committee, presented the awards.

"I'm sure we'll be reading your names a lot more as we get closer to graduation," Driscoll said to the students.

Phu, who budgets her time between her position as captain of the math team, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and membership on the tennis team and environmental club, said she hopes to become an orthodontist.

"Why not?" she said when asked how she came to her intended career path.

Banville, who maintains a 4.6 grade point average while participating in the French club, golf team, National Honor Society, spring track team, and winter track team, of which he is the captain, said he was "at a loss for words" upon receiving the award.

The Certificate of Academic Excellence is awarded based on class rank, three year cumulative grade point average, and a personal choice from the district superintendent. Students who receive the recognition must be in the top five percent of their class.

Banville's parents, Robert and Diane, both expressed pride in their son's achievement after watching him receive the award.

"He basically gets up when I go to work and goes to bed well after I go to bed," said Robert Banville.

Phu's mother, Fong, also in attendance, said she was proud of her daughter.

"She deserved it because she studies hard and she is a good kid," Fong Phu said.
