Man captured after escape from Salem courthouse

SALEM - A man awaiting trial on gun and drug charges escaped today from custody at Salem District Court but was captured by police on Hawthorne Boulevard here about an hour later, officials said.

Karl Hackney was among the detainees brought into the district court in downtown Salem and somehow managed to escape from custody shortly after noon, said Salem Police Sergeant Mark Berube.

State Police reported at 1:20 p.m. that Hackney had been recaptured on Hawthorne Boulevard. No further details of his escape and capture were immediately available.

According to the Sex Offender Registry Board's website, Hackney is a Level 3 offender, who was convicted in Essex Superior Court in 1985 of raping a child and aggravated abuse of a child.

Today, according to Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's office, Hackney was scheduled to appear at Essex Superior Court in Salem to be arraigned on gun and drug charges. Hackney was already being held on $100,000 cash bail for an earlier indictment on gun and drug charges, according to prosecutors.
