Police arrested a Salem man after he ran toward a police lieutenant following an alleged assault on his girlfriend.

According to a police document, the victim reported her boyfriend, Steve Kove Denton, 25, assaulted her while in a "jealous rage" yesterday morning.

Denton allegedly punched the victim in the head, shoved his fingers in her mouth and dragged her to the floor, the police document said. Denton also allegedly locked her in her apartment, threw her cellphone to the floor, breaking the screen, and took $150 from her wallet and ran from the Derby Street apartment.

When running from the scene, Denton ran toward Salem police Lieutenant Matthew Desmond, who was working a detail in the area, as the victim could be heard calling for help, the police document said.

Desmond called in the incident and officer Thomas Pelletier arrested Denton, according to the report.

Denton is charged with two counts of domestic assault and battery, larceny under $250, malicious destruction of property under $250, intimidation of a witness, and kidnapping, according to the police document.
