Voters will cast ballots in two city-wide preliminary elections this Tuesday, Sept. 20.  Polling hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The contests will reduce the fields of candidates for the Nov. 8 election in races for the four councilor at large seats and three School Committee seats.

The councilor at large race features 10  candidates, two of whom be eliminated in the preliminary. The contestants include the four incumbents Thomas H. Furey, Joan B. Lovely, Steven A. Pinto, and Arthur C. Sargent, III; and six challengers: Darek  Barcikowski, School Committee member Kevin R. Carr, Jr., Matthew J. Fraser, Teasie F. Riley Goggin, Matthew J. Richard, and Kenneth A. Sawicki.

In addition to his at large bid, Sawicki is running for School Committee and Ward 6 councilor. In 2009,  he lost bids for mayor and councilor at large. Goggin also ran unsuccessfully for councilor at large that year.  The School Committee preliminary will pare the candidate field from nine to six.   The contenders are incumbents Nate Bryant and James M. Fleming, and Deborah A. Amaral, William J. Kirby, Lisa M. Lavoie, Mark K. Lee, Sean P. O’Brien, and Francis M. Vigeant, in addition to Sawicki.
