Two Salem men arrested for trying to steal head of dragon ice sculpture
Two men were arrested on Sunday morning for trying to steal the head of a dragon ice sculpture that is part of Salem's So Sweet Chocolate and Ice Sculpture Festival, according to the Salem police logs.
Around 1a.m. on Sunday morning, patrol officer Tracy O’Leary noticed the broken ice sculpture in front of the Bewitched in Salem shop (180 Essex St.) before she allegedly observed William B. Hare, 47, and Rajendra John Srivastava, 30, of 34 Pleasant St. carrying “a large chunk of ice” about 15 minutes later.
After the men told O’Leary they were taking the dragon head home as a souvenir, O’Leary made the men return the ice.
About 14 minutes later, however, O’Leary was dispatched to Howard St. for a report of two suspicious males carrying a large chunk of ice.
“Once again I stopped the two males,” O’Leary said in her report. “Srivastava was again carrying the heard of the dragon ice sculpture that I had just told him to put back, and watching him put it back. Hare was immediately hostile and started yelling at me that I couldn’t stop him. Hare was yelling that they were taking the head home and was trying to get Srivastava to continue walking.
“Hare was yelling in my face that he was a doctor and that he could do what he wanted. At this point I radioed for backup. The other units were concerned for my well-being because they could hear Hare yelling in the background.”
Hare and Srivastava, who both live at 30 Pleasant St., were arrested and charged with receiving stolen worth more than $250 and larceny of more than $250, according to the logs. During the booking process, police found a small plastic baggie containing several pills, according to the logs.
Hare, who was charged with being disorderly, was also charged with possession of a Class B drug and two counts of possession of a Class E drug.
