The following was submitted by Margo Steiner, assistant director of marketing and communications at Salem State:

The Salem State University Preschool, established at the university in 1970, recently earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals. The accreditation is valid through 2017.

"We're proud to have earned the mark of quality from NAEYC, and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards," said Beverly Gerson, director. "NAEYC accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible. Our curriculum is inspired using the Reggio Approach and we maintain a deep focus on developing children's social and emotional skills."

To earn NAEYC accreditation, the program went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the ten NAEYC early childhood program standards and more than 400 related accreditation criteria. The program received accreditation after an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the ten program standards.

The Salem State University Preschool, located on the university's Upper South Campus, overlooks the Forest River Conservation area and serves as one of Salem State's laboratory schools.

House Speaker DeLeo to speak at undergrad commencement:

House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo will serve as commencement speaker and receive an honorary degree at Salem State's College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education undergraduate commencement on Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. in the O'Keefe Athletic Center.
