AMC's Walking Dead has got nothing on Salem.

The annual Running Dead - Zombie 5K returns to historic Gallows Hill Park this Saturday. Part zombie apocalypse and part 5K race, with elements of flag football sprinkled in, the event is a great way to kick off the Halloween season in Salem for fitness enthusiasts and the animated undead alike.

Participants run the 5K course as "runners" or "zombies," and proceeds from the event will go to benefit the North Shore Medical Center Cancer Center in Salem.

Runners will try to navigate the course with zombies giving chase, and lurking behind trees, rocks and bushes waiting to attack. Zombies eat "brains" by snatching flags off of runners. Once a runner loses all of his or her flags, they are "dead."

Registration is currently closed, but all are welcome to join as spectators, and to join racers at The Lobster Shanty on Artists' Row for zombie-themed cocktails and their famous "brains" on a cracker at the The Running Dead after party at 8 p.m. DJ Alvis of Decade and VuduDJ of Darq Salem will be on hand spinning tracks that even a corpse can't help but move to.
