A number of city streets will be closed on Thursday night as the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade kicks off the city's month-long Halloween celebration.
All streets along the parade route, which begins at Shetland Park on Congress Street and ends at Salem Common, will be closed to vehicular travel.
According to Kate Fox, executive director of Destination Salem, the city's official tourism office, the following roads will be closed from about 6:15 to 8 p.m.
Congress Street (from Shetland to Derby Street)
Derby Street (from Congress to Central Street)
Washington Street (to the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall)
Hawthorne Boulevard (near the common, from Essex Street to the Witch Museum)
This year, the parade is taking a right onto Central Street by Murphy's Restaurant and Pub so that no portions of Lafayette Street/Route 1A or Route 114 must shut down.
Fox encourages anyone planning to attend the parade from out-of-town to take advantage of alternate forms of transportation, and suggests that anyone who plans to drive in arrive before 5:30 p.m. and take advantage of the city's parking garages and public lots.
