Starting on Thanksgiving and carrying through Saturday, parking will be free in all city garages and parking lots.

Meters for street parking will not be enforced on Thanksgiving, but will resume with normal hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday and Saturday.

"I hope free parking encourages more shoppers to consider Downtown Salem for their holiday shopping," Driscoll said in a statement. "Our diverse stores and restaurants have something for everyone on your list."

Small Business Saturday, a day between Black Friday and Cyber Monday dedicated to supporting local, independently-owned businesses, is this weekend, and Driscoll hopes that free parking on Saturday will encourage residents and visitors to take and advantage of the boutiques and small shops scattered throughout the downtown area.

"Salem has many wonderful locally owned stores and restaurants," Driscoll said. "Our small businesses provide so much support to the community and it's important to support them, especially during the holidays."
