The Essex National Heritage Area has announced the winners of its 2012 photo contest, with 13 local photographers recognized for photos taken throughout the Essex National Heritage Area, an area covering 500 square miles of Eastern Massachusetts north of Boston.
Arlene Taliadaros, of Essex, won the grand prize with her photo "Pinky Schooner Ardelle," which was taken at the Essex River Basin.
Images were submitted in one of three categories - "Images of the Essex National Heritage Area," "In Town/Downtown" and "The Merrimack Valley" - and three winners were chosen from each category. A youth entry category also yielded three winners.
Susan Plutsky and Philip Karwowski, both of Beverly, took second and third place respectively in the "Heritage Area" category, and Rick Matthias, of Salem, took second place in the "In Town/Downtown" category. All of the winning photos can be found here.
See the full list of winners below.
The winning images will be displayed for a full year at the National Park Service Visitor Center in Salem, and at the office of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission in Haverhill.
The photographers will be honored with awards on Saturday, December 8, at 10 a.m. at the National Park Service Visitor Center. The event is free and open to the public. Call Essex Heritage at 978-740-0444 to RSVP.
