Salem committee to unveil plaque promoting diversity and tolerance
Local officials will gather in downtown Salem Thursday to dedicate a plaque that promotes diversity and tolerance throughout the city.
The plaque, which is being donated by the city’s No Place for Hate Committee, will be debuted in a ceremony at 3 p.m. on the corner of Front Street and Washington Street. Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, along with other local officials will be present to support the committee’s dedication to fighting prejudice and enhancing community support.
“This new plaque and the No Place for Hate Committee’s work embodies what Salem is all about,” Driscoll said. “Our City is comprised of people with many different backgrounds, nationalities, religions and faiths, living and working together to make us a stronger community. Such diversity drives us to understand and appreciate one another’s differences, and is exactly what makes Salem such a welcoming and desirable place to live.”
The No Place for Hate Committee combats discrimination, bigotry and bullying and works toward a prejudice-free community. It provides education and support to those who need it through monthly meetings open to the public.
“It’s a project that we’ve been working on over the last year to promote this diversity,” said Scott Weisburg, chair of the No Place for Hate Committee. “When you have an issue coming up, whatever it might be, you don’t know where to turn. People are afraid of repercussions or they’re embarrassed. There are people in the city that care about what’s going on in people’s lives and we’re here to help.”
A post dedication reception will be hosted by the Adriatic Restaurant and Bar, which is located next to the plaque location.
