The city of Salem welcomes spring with its monthly First Friday celebration. This month over 25 businesses are participating and will host special events, activities, promotions, music, art and food, among other things.

To spice things up this month Urban Coastal Dance, a group that aspires to instill an appreciation for the natural world and give a vibrant voice to the environment, will perform segments from its dance "Aquatic Parallels."

On Pickering Wharf, the Salem Waterfront Hotel and Marina will be offering 50 percent off appetizers from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., while local musician Erinn Brown provides entertainment.

Local author Roberta Chadis will be at Living With Pets to read from her book 'Good Boy Jesse', a story narrated by her golden retriever.

On the other side of town on Front Street, Boston Bead Company will offer refreshments from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., while participants try their hands at embroidering felt beads.

At Caffe’ Graziani, attendees can indulge in “Circolo Italiano”, a dinner with Italian speakers discussing all manner of topics.

On the first Friday of every month, many downtown Salem businesses stay open until at least 8 p.m. and host special events and entertainment, offer discounts and promotions.

The event is part of an initiative to engage the city in the various activities and products that local businesses offer.
