Salem Theatre Company concludes their Tenth Anniversary Season with a production of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A Delicate Balance. The production is directed by STC Artistic Director, John Fogle and will run May 9 – June 1.

 

Playwright Edward Albee has had an extremely significant impact on American theater. A Delicate Balance has often been credited with creating an archetype for American drama with its classic study of the American family, albeit a dysfunctional one.

Linda Goetz is Claire and Chuck Schwager is Tobias in a scene form Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama A Delicate Balance, on stage May 9 - June 1 at Salem Theatre Company.

The play examines the confusion that erupts in a modern family’s attempt to avoid pain and discomfort, which, as Albee demonstrates, only creates more of both.

“I view this play as a fascinating period-piece, set in an affluent Connecticut suburb in the echoes of the conformist 1950s,” says director Fogle. “Though times have certainly changed, many will recognize the milieu of this story – where the appearance of virtue is equated with virtue itself.”

In A Delicate Balance, the lives of well-to-do suburbanites, Agnes and Tobias, are turned upside down by the sudden appearance of lifelong friends, Harry and Edna, who seek refuge from an unnamed terror. In the strange space of a weekend, the invasion of this “plague” exposes the couple’s own emotional imbalances.

“It’s about the masks we wear to defend ourselves and what can happen – for the good – when the masks slip,” Fogle concludes.

The New York Times called the play “…an evening of theatrical fireworks!”

 

The cast features company favorites Sarah Carlin of Beverly, Linda Goetz of Newton and STC Main Stage newcomers Lida McGirr, Sharon Mason, Jeffrey Phillips and Chuck Schwager.

  

A Delicate Balance is sponsored by Beverly Cooperative Bank, supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (a state agency) and will have 15 performances over four weeks in the STC Theater at 90 Lafayette Street in Salem from May 9 – June 1. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $20 for Seniors and $10 for Students and are available online at www.salemtheatre.com or by calling Ovation Tix at 866-811-4111. There will be two Name Your Own Ticket Price performances on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m.
