Marlborough picks Saugus Superintendent Richard Langlois to lead city's schools

January 27, 2013 08:19 AM

The Marlborough School Committee has chosen Saugus Superintendent Richard Langlois to lead the city's public schools, officials announced Saturday.

“We believe that Mr. Langlois is the right person at the right time for the job,” said Mayor Arthur Vigeant in a press release from the school district.

Langlois was one of three final candidates for the position. The other finalists were retired Puyallup, Wash., superintendent Tony Apostle and New York education consultant Christopher A. Bogden.

More than 40 candidates were screened and five candidates were initially interviewed, the district said.

The Marlborough School Committee named Langlois to the position Saturday following a three-hour meeting, according to the press release, citing his "proven administrative and instructional leadership track record in Massachusetts."

His appointment will become official once his contract negotiations with the School Committee are finalized, the district said. His official start date is yet to be determined.

Stephen Dlott has been serving as interim superintendent this school year. Anthony Pope resigned as superintendent last July after only two years on the job, following months of drama that featured a no-confidence vote from teachers, an accusation from a guidance counselor that he had shoved her, and assertions from students that they felt disrespected by him.

Pope was preceded by two superintendents who lasted a total of four years in Marlborough.

Saugus High School principal on leave since Dec. 18 amid audit

January 9, 2013 03:38 PM

School officials in Saugus Wednesday said that Joseph Diorio, the principal at Saugus High School, has been placed on paid leave pending an audit of the school’s finances.

Diorio has been on leave since Dec. 18, the superintendent of schools said in a statement. School officials had not explained the reasons for his absence, prompting widespread speculation and spurring students to post “missing” fliers around town.

The superintendent, Richard Langlois, said auditors will look into the "management of certain financial and other affairs of Saugus High School."

"This leave is not disciplinary and no conclusion has been reached regarding Mr. Diorio," he said. "At this point Mr. Diorio is cooperating during this inquiry."

Through his office, Langlois declined further comment.

In a statement, Langlois asked the public to "refrain from any speculation or conjecture" and said he would have no further comment until the audit was complete.

Steve Castinetti, vice-chairman of the board of selectmen, criticized school officials for failing to explain Diorio's absence until now, even to town leaders.

"We certainly should be brought into what’s going on, and I don’t know why we haven’t been," he said. "I think the townspeople and taxpayers have a right to know what's going on, especially those with children at the school."

Most Simon Malls opening at 12:30 a.m. this Black Friday

November 6, 2012 03:15 PM

Most Simon Malls across the state will kick off Black Friday shopping this year at 12:30 a.m., hours earlier than past years, the malls announced Tuesday.

Simon said nearly all of its shopping venues in Massachusetts will be following the new, early bird hours. They include the Burlington Mall, the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, the Northshore Mall in Peabody, the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers, the Arsenal Mall in Watertown, and Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough.

The exceptions are the Mall at Chestnut Hill and the Copley Place Mall, which will both open later, at 9 a.m.

The 12:30 a.m. start follows several years in which Simon and other mall owners in Massachusetts have steadily rolled back the start of Black Friday as the kickoff to the holiday shopping season has grown in importance to retailers. Last year Simon opened its malls at 4 a.m.

Shoppers who opt to kick off their Black Friday shopping in the midnight hour will be welcomed by “greeters” armed with info on the latest deals and “rejuvenation stations” offering a place to take a break, check your email and enjoy some refreshments, according to a press statement from Regan Communications, Simon’s local public relations firm.

The other Simon malls in Massachusetts that are opening earlier include Square One Mall in Saugus, Auburn Mall, Cape Cod Mall, and Emerald Square Mall
in Attleboro. All Simon malls in New Hampshire will open at midnight.
