Scituate high remembers late hockey player
Family and friends of Tim Mahoney, a Scituate High lacrosse and hockey player killed in a car accident nearly two years ago, gathered at the school's football field to dedicate an arched ticket booth and pavilion picnic area for spectators.
“Tim was very big into Scituate athletics. That’s why we picked the site, and it’s something all the athletes could enjoy,” said Phil Mahoney, Tim’s nephew.
The dedication took place last Saturday, with about 75 friends and relatives attending.
As a freshman, Tim Mahoney was one of the players on Scituate’s 2007 state champion ice hockey team. He died at age 16 in February 2008 after a car crash in Cohasset. The pickup truck Mahoney was riding in was driven by 18-year-old classmate Christopher Barrow, who suffered paralyzing injuries.
The accident shook the families, who had known one another from days when both lived in Cohasset. “The whole situation was not easy,” Phil Mahoney said. “It was very difficult for both families,” he said.
Mahoney said the money that paid for the ticket booths, which line each side of the gate as patrons enter the field, and a covered picnic area came from donations received when the family began the Timothy Mahoney Memorial Fund. Money from the fund is also given to a Scituate High School senior each year.
“We wanted to do something for Tim, his teammates and his peers,” Phil said.
Anyone interested in donating to the fund can send a check to the Timothy Mahoney Memorial Fund, c/o Frank Mahoney, 89 Barker Road, Scituate, MA 02066.
