U.S. Senator Kirk to visit Scituate's Inly School
The Inly School in Scituate will have a few special guests next week, including newly appointed US Senator Paul G. Kirk.
School spokeswoman Liz Knox said Kirk will stop at the school on Friday, Nov. 13, to speak to eighth grade students. The Montessori schools in Duxbury and Milton have also been invited to the private visit, she said.
“We are thrilled to have him come and talk to our students,” Knox said.
The visit was arranged by Inly School librarian and children’s author Shelley Sommer, (cq) who worked with Kirk at the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in Boston.
Kirk was chairman of the foundation's board, and Sommer worked at the library for 15 years.
In 2005, Sommer wrote a book geared toward middle-school students, entitled “John F. Kennedy: His life and legacy.”
Knox said she didn't know what Kirk will talk about, but to have a visit from a U.S. Senator, even if he is a temporary appointment, is a thrill for the school.
“It’s just something that students will always remember,” Knox said.
The Inly School is an independent private school modeled on the Montessori philosophy. It has 265 students from 17 South Shore communities ranging from Plymouth to Boston to Hanson.
Kirk was appointed to the position by Governor Deval Patrick after the death of longtime US Senator Edward M. Kennedy, whose death sparked a political controversy over whether Kennedy’s replacement should be elected or appointed.
