The town of Scituate has the highest percentage of people with Irish ancestry in the state, according to Census figures released today that show high concentrations of people with Irish heritage in several communities south of Boston.

The Census found that 47.5 percent of Scituate residents claimed Irish as their first ancestry, followed by 46.5 percent of Braintree residents, 45.8-percent of Hull residents, 45.6 percent of Marshfield residents and 44.9 percent of Avon residents. Next in line were Pembroke, at 44.9 percent, and Milton, at 44.5-percent.

Statewide, 17.1% reported their first or primary ancestry as Irish. The Census reported that 17.4-percent of Boston's residents named Irish as their first ancestry.

The information on ancestry was released as part of the latest American Community Survey, a five-year survey provides the fullest demographic portrait of the nation in a decade, and marks the first population breakdowns for every community in the United States since the last census.
