Scituate police found two young children wandering near the intersection of Country Way and Curtis Street Saturday morning, and located their parents a few hours later.

A 2-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy were found wandering on the side of the road on at approximately 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning, Scituate police said. Both children were dressed in pajamas and soiled diapers.

The children were put in the custody of the Department of Children and Families and police searched for the parents, said police. A reverse "911" call was sent out to the area in an attempt to locate the parents.

At about 10 a.m., Scituate police was contacted by the children’s parents, who were not identified, to report them missing from their home on Branch Street, police said in a release.

According to a statement released by the police, the family had returned from out of state several hours earlier and the parents had child-proofed the residence because the 3-year-old had recently learned to open doors. Door locks had properly been set, the statement said, but the boy found a way to bypass them anyway.

Although the incident is still under investigation, it does not appear to be a case of criminal neglect, police said.
