John Scopelleti, an English teacher at South Shore Vocational Technical High School, was recognized by Scituate officials on Tuesday after being named a finalist for the 2012-2013 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award.

According to Scituate selectmen, hundreds were recommended for the honor, and Scituate is proud to have one of its own as one of the six finalists. This year's winner was Kathleen Turner, a French teacher at Sharon High School.

“Over the years many residents of Scituate have attended South Shore Vocational Technical School and gone on to great careers. We’re appreciative of the school and everyone who is working [there]," Selectman Jo Norton said. As for the award, "it’s an honor for anyone to get to that stage. Not an easy task and one you should be proud of."

Selectman Shawn Harris said that as a parent with two children in the high school, sometimes teachers don’t get the recognition they need.

"To be a finalist says a lot," he said.
