Summer Street has been closed after a man allegedly drove into a telephone pole, knocking several wires down.

One man has been sent to the hospital, and Summer Street has been closed to traffic after the man ran his car into a telephone pole, police said.

According to police, the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday. Police are still looking into the cause of the accident, but believe the car was traveling northbound on Summer Street near the intersection with Cedar Street when the driver drove his car into the pole.

The force of the impact snapped the pole in half, which brought down several wires.

The driver, who police said is at least 40 years old, was transported to South Shore Hospital. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no others were involved in the accident.

National Grid is responding to the scene. Although power has not been shut off in the area, it is likely to be turned off temporarily to remove the car, police said.

The street is closed to traffic. Police estimate that it will be reopened at around 4 p.m.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

According to police, the road does not have a history of accidents, and is typically not a dangerous intersection.
