A fire set in a Scituate home on Thursday afternoon was the work of an arsonist, state and local fire officials said Friday.

The blaze occurred in a home on Central Avenue, the state fire marshal’s office said in a statement. The fire began about 3:30 p.m. and was knocked down about 20 minutes later.

“Fortunately no one in the home and no firefighters were injured, ” said Scituate Fire Chief Richard Judge in the statement.

Reached by phone Friday, State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said it is a seasonal home and was closed for the winter. Coan declined to comment on whether the blaze is connected to a recent spate of arsons in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Fire officials have said that several arsons in the state are related and that a serial arsonist could be behind the blazes.

The Scituate fire and police departments are investigating the fire, along with State Police assigned to Coan’s office.

“If anyone saw or heard anything in that area around that time, please call the Scituate Police or Fire departments or the statewide Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229,” Scituate Police Chief Brian E. Stewart said in the fire marshal’s statement.

The Arson Hotline provides rewards of up to $5,000 for information that helps solve arson cases.
