Davis Square initiative plods ahead despite growing pains

As it approaches its fourth birthday, the Davis Square Area Resident-Business Initiative (DARBI) is having growing pains: Volunteers can barely keep up with interest and events, said president Thalia Tringo. Having no regular meeting place for over a year didn't help. However, the nonprofit is getting back on track with a new space and possibly even a part-time staff member; the board is discussing the latter.

"I really want the organization to get on its own feet," Tringo said.

The priority this fall is finding out how to help locally owned businesses in the down economy, Tringo said, citing the entry of Buffalo Exchange, a national used-clothing shop, across the street from Somerville-born Poor Little Rich Girl. (And yes, "part of that is going to be talking about the parking issue," she said.) However, as a wave of restaurants opens, resident concerns matter as well: "The idea is really to make people feel engaged in the community," Tringo said.

Coming up: A home-based business networking lunch for those bored with their own four walls, and the group's annual Davis Square Midnight Madness shop-a-thon Dec. 3. In addition, Somerville Local First, a Chamber-minus-chains group, has a coupon booklet out with offers for stores and restaurants.

DARBI meets Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Somerville Theatre screening room. Learn more at yourdavissquare.com.
