The following is a press release from the City of Somerville:

The Somerville Fire Department announced that the annual inspection of all fire hydrants in the city will begin Monday, October 19th and conclude Saturday, October 31st. During this two-week period all hydrants in the city will be tested. This procedure requires the flushing of water from hydrants as well as a check of the mechanical operation of the hydrants.

“Regular inspection of all fire hydrants is an essential step in ensuring that we have the water we need when dealing with emergency situations,” said Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher.

During the inspection, some sediment may be disturbed in the water mains, causing rusty water at the taps in homes and business establishments. This rusty water condition is temporary and will clear in a matter of a few hours. Although the water may appear dirty or discolored, it does not pose a health risk to city residents.

Until the water runs clear, it is advisable to avoid washing clothes, especially white fabrics. If any rust stains appear on wet laundry, the clothes should not be dried, and the homeowner should call 311 for instructions on how to obtain a free bottle of rust remover from the Water Department.

The inspections will be conducted Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and in the evening, if needed, from 6:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m.

Anyone with questions regarding this procedure should call 311 during normal business hours, or contact the Somerville Fire Department directly at (617) 623-1700, ext. 8120.
