The Lowell Street station needs new concrete.

The Lowell Street fire station is getting a new concrete driveway for far less than the original cost estimate, according to a city official.

The Board of Aldermen signed off on a proposal last week to draw about $12,800 from the city’s Capital Projects Stabilization Fund for the upgrade.

“This is important for [that] part of the driveway,” said Alderman Maryann Heuston.

The current driveway has cracked concrete, and the sidewalk in front of it needs a complete repaving.

Stanley Koty, commissioner of the Department of Public Works, told the Board that the winning bid – from a contractor located near the station – came in under original projections by about $30,000.

“This is an excellent price,” Koty said.

The Board approved the spending measure unanimously.
