The Traffic Commission may allow non-resident parking on both sides of this stretch of Wheatland Street.

The Traffic Commission is expected to approve a proposal to open the west side of Wheatland Street at Mystic Avenue to 30-minute parking during the day for vehicles without a residential permit.

A city spokeswoman said signs allowing non-resident parking from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. went up on that part of the street near the intersection two weeks ago, in anticipation of the commission's approval.

Regulations that took effect in January require permit parking on all city streets, except for about 20 main thoroughfares.

Critics of the policy have argued that it could harm local businesses. Romanza Pizzeria is located at the corner of Wheatland and Mystic. Other nearby businesses include the Princess Beauty Salon and Salve Regina Market.

A city spokeswoman said the pizzeria and other business on the strip requested the change, and it took effect last month.
